Cairns to Auckland

The great thing about flying from Cairns directly to Auckland is the breath taking views of the Great Barrier Reef. Coming a close second to actually being in the water the views from above are nearly as impressive as it gives some dimension to the huge scale of this natural phenomenon which you simply can't get at sea level. Although Air New Zealand don't fly everyday between the two cities so we had to tweak our travel plans to coincide with flights, but we are so glad we did.

It was our first flight with Air New Zealand and apart from the incredibly slow check in we were both very impressed with the airline. We particularly liked the seat back entertainment and the seat back food ordering was really nifty too, although it was too easy to swipe your credit card and open up a tab!

So after many years of waiting we have finally arrived in New Zealand. We have wanted to visit for so long but as it's so far away it just hasn't been practical before. To quote a Kaiser Chief song 'Oh my god I can't believe it, I've never been this far away from home'

We are really looking forward to Auckland but can't wait to get our 'spaceship' (a car that you can sleep in, more on that in a later blog) and get on the open road and explore the wilderness. We are planning on doing some serious distance in the coming 4 weeks around 3,500km visiting both the North and South islands. Although we plan to blog as often as possible, with limited internet and mobile reception in remote areas we are planning on blogging after Auckland and then having a single blog for the North and South islands.

Haere ra for now
